Wireless Communication Performance Measurements Commences in China

Testing Operations for Connected Vehicles Begin at CICV, a Chinese National Research Institute

Fremont, Calif., September 15, 2023  – TOYO Corporation, a leading provider of advanced measurement solutions headquartered in Tokyo, today announced that its Chinese subsidiary, TOYO Corporation China (Location: Shanghai, China), has delivered a wireless communication performance measurement system for connected vehicles for the test service launched in July 2023 by China Intelligent and Connected Vehicles (Beijing) Research Institute Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Beijing, China; hereinafter referred to as “CICV”), a national research institute in China.

There is growing importance in OTA (Over-the-Air) measurement of in-vehicle wireless communication performance for the development of ICV (Intelligent and Connected Vehicle) technology that will realize safe and efficient autonomous driving through advanced communication technology and artificial intelligence. As a national research institute leading the ICV industry in China and playing a central role in R&D for ICV technology, CICV aims to become a think tank and a center for R&D of common technologies and test facilities. ICV utilizes a variety of wireless communication technologies, including V2X (Vehicle to X), mobile communications, and GNSS, and faces numerous challenges due to their communication functions and complex systems. To address these challenges, CICV established a “Vehicular Wireless Communication Lab” and launched its test service for customers both in and outside of China in July 2023.

The system delivered by TOYO to CICV has been developed by applying the OTA test method created originally for mobile terminals and antennas by General Test Systems Inc. (hereinafter “GTS”). As an industry-leading expert in the field of mobile terminals, antennas, and OTA testing, GTS has utilized the patented Radiated Two-Stage (RTS) method, approved by 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project, established in December 1998 by the standardization organizations of various countries to promote 3rd generation cell phone technology), as a test method for LTE mobile terminals and base stations, for in-vehicle wireless communication performance measurement.

Compared to conventional methods, this system uses more theory-based calculations to derive measurement results and was selected because it is a cost-effective solution with fewer sources of measurement error, enabling simpler measurements. The system covers a wide range of testing, from testing in-vehicle antennas alone to communication testing for evaluating the quality of V2X communication.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, TOYO will continue to contribute to the development of safer mobility and next-generation transportation systems by offering a variety of measurement solutions required for the development of autonomous driving (AD) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including the Wireless Communication Performance Evaluation System, to markets both in Japan and overseas.

Key features include:

  • Uses GTS’s patented RTS method approved by 3GPP
  • Capable of 3D MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) testing, even on large test objects such as automobiles
  • Supports various test items, including antenna radiation performance, receiver sensitivity, electromagnetic interference reception, multi-antenna performance evaluation, and vehicle communication performance evaluation under real-world conditions

Tests performed by CICV’s Vehicular Wireless Communications Lab:

  • Passive and active tests of antennas and wireless systems at the full-vehicle level
  • Vehicular GNSS performance tests
  • Vehicular MIMO communication system tests
  • Vehicular multi-wireless system compatibility tests
  • Vehicular C-V2X access layer RF/protocol compliance certification
  • Vehicular C-V2X network layer/message layer protocol conformance certification
  • Vehicular C-V2X functional verification

Reduce EMI in Switched-Mode Power Supplies Design
Speaker: Uday Ramalingam, R&D Engineer, Keysight Technologies
Switched-mode power supply (SMPS) design is rapidly evolving with the emergence of wide bandgap semiconductors such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) power devices. Higher switching speeds together with the layout of a printed circuit board (PCB) can become a source of electromagnetic interference (EMI). This challenge frustrates many power electronics designers. To overcome this challenge, a designer needs to identify potential EMI problems in simulation. Until now, this requires expertise in electromagnetics. In this seminar, we will discuss how to overcome this challenge.
Keysight has partnership with IPERA to introduce a curriculum around conducted EMI and its effects on SMPS design.
