The new TFT-LCD evaluation system has been released

Now you can measure and evaluate LCD panels and liquid crystal materials with a single system.

The model “LCM-3A” TFT-LCD evaluation system has been developed and released by TOYO.

TOYO Corporation (Head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Masaru Gomi, hereafter TOYO) has been selling since 2001 the self-developed model “6254” liquid crystal physical property evaluation system, which is a standard product for quality evaluation in the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) industry.

As a result of function enhancement, we are pleased to release on February 3, 2017 the “LCM-3A”, a TFT-LCD evaluation system that can measure not only liquid crystal materials but also LCD panels including LCOS (liquid-crystal-on-silicon) panels used for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications.  For further business expansion, we intend to release the new model also in North America, where the R&D of LCOS is becoming active.

Model LCM-3A

Since LCD was adopted for calculators in the 1970s, various applications have been developed including PC, TV, and smartphones, helping to boost the turnover of the entire LCD industry to as high as 10 trillion Japanese yen now.

Since 1985, TOYO has been selling a range of liquid crystal and LCD material evaluation instrument systems, and released in 2001 the “6254”, the very first liquid crystal physical property evaluation system that performs non-destructive quantitative evaluation of impurity ions (the main cause of the irregularities and stains on LCD panels) based on the voltage or current waveform obtained by applying arbitrary voltage waveforms to a dummy cell.

This model has since been used widely as an industry standard system in and outside Japan for R&D and quality control of such LCD panel components as liquid crystal, oriented films, and color filters, as well as for process evaluation of LCD panel production lines.  However, the “6254” requires a dummy cell to confirm that no impurity ions are included in the panels in the production process and to perform process evaluation, due to a lack of the capability to measure the actual panels on the production line directly.

The newly released “LCM-3A” has this direct measurement capability implemented, eliminating the need for dummy samples and saving a lot of time and expenses.  Moreover, the “LCM-3A” completes quantitative evaluation of impurity ions in several minutes instead of several weeks of time required in the past. As such, the “LCM-3A” allows you to evaluate LCD panel materials and actual panels directly, easily, and speedily, thereby helping to reduce the time to market, the labor for process management and failure analysis, and the loss in yield.

Not to mention, the “LCM-3A” can measure LCOS used for VR and AR, as well as LCD. Furthermore, the users of a 6254 can have it upgraded to an LCM-3A through hardware and software expansion.

[Main features]

  • Capable of measuring such properties as the voltage holding ratio, ion density, and residual DC voltage that are essential for LCD quality evaluation by itself
  • Capable of measuring panels of mobile size to TV size
  • Capable of measuring LCD panels and LCOS, as well as liquid crystal materials
  • Available in 8CH (simultaneous measurements) and 48CH (sequential measurements) configurations
  • Capable of applying voltage to the gates and switches on up to 16 channels for LCD panel measurements
  • Low leak current (1 pA or below) essential for high precision measurements

[Product data]

  • Product name: “LCM-3A” TFT-LCD evaluation system
  • Available worldwide
  • Release date: February 3rd, 2017
